How To Prevent Face Mask Skin Irritation

Most of us are new to wearing a protective face mask, especially as a regular part of our daily lives. While immediate concerns may be around comfort, it’s important to be conscious of your skincare routine so you can prevent face mask skin irritation before it starts.

Ask anyone who wears a mask regularly and they will most likely tell you that they suffer from Irritating Mask Syndrome. Okay, that is a term I created to acknowledge these issues. The chapped skin, acne breakouts, rosacea, or other general skin irritation that can result from wearing a mask. I have seen these conditions many times with professionals who have to wear a mask regularly. A mask creates a barrier around the mouth and nose, allowing your breath to create a moist environment for bacteria to flourish. Not to mention, the general irritation and stress from wearing a mask can take its own toll on your skin health.

A proper skincare routine can prevent irritation or help heal skin that has spent time under a mask. Follow these steps and use these products to help prevent and heal skin irritations.

8 easy steps to help your skin

BEFORE PUTTING ON YOUR MASK

1. Wash your face

Use a gentle, face wash like our Tamanu Luxury Facial Cleanser to ensure that pores are free of dirt and bacteria. A foundation of clean skin will set you and the additional products you use up for success.

2. Add a protective layer of moisturizer

If you’re wearing your mask for a prolonged period, use a serum that will penetrate deep within the skin’s layers for lasting results. Choose a serum that has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties like our Citrine Complete Botanical Treatment which is a serum and moisturizer in one. This will help ward off free radicals and other irritations.

3. Don’t forget your lips

Lips can dry out quickly, so take care of lips before putting on your mask. For extra moisturizing lip care, apply our Lip Assist Conditioning Treatment, a botanical treatment that will keep lips hydrated.

4. Put on sunscreen

No one wants mask marks! Add a layer of sunscreen before you put on your mask so you don’t end up with uneven sunburn lines. And yes! Put sunscreen on the skin under your mask. UV rays are powerful and have been known to infiltrate fabric.

AFTER TAKING OFF YOUR MASK

5. Wash your hands and face

Before you take off your mask, get rid of any dirt and germs by washing your hands well. Wash your face. Your face will thank you. Especially if you choose a face wash that is gentle and has anti-inflammatory properties like our Tamanu Luxury Facial Cleanser.

6. Assess your needs

Be your own expert and decide what your face needs. You may need a boost of moisture from our B Quenched Facial Oil.

7. Hydrate

There’s a good chance that your water intake will decrease while you’re wearing a mask. When it finally comes off, focus on replenishing your skin by drinking water or eating hydrating foods like fruits and vegetables.

8. Get your beauty sleep

Choose products that will repair and replenish your skin with antioxidants and vitamins for skin health. After cleansing, apply Citrine Complete Botanical Treatment or B Quenched Facial Oil to help repair your skin while you sleep. You can also use them together and layer or blend them. All of our products are formulated to work together. Finish with our Lip Assist Conditioning Treatment to smooth lips.
