  • Allantoin

EWG SKIN DEEP SCORE: 1 view profile

INGREDIENT PROFILE

  • Allantoin is a white powder that is odorless, safe, non-toxic, and non-allergenic.

 DERIVED FROM

  • The plant-based Allantoin that we use is derived from the leaves of the comfrey plant. However, it’s important to realize that Allantoin can be derived from uric acid oxidation in most mammals (with the exception of humans and apes) or harvested from urine.

HISTORY

  • The earliest records of Allantoin date back to the 16th century where it was used to treat wounds and skin ulcers. The dates vary as to whether or not it was first discovered in the roots of the comfrey plant or in the uric acid of mammals, but by the early 1900s both varieties were available. In addition to it being a great moisturizer it was found to stimulate new skin cells to aid in wound healing. Today it continues to be used in skin care products for its healing and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as its moisturizing benefits.

SKIN CARE BENEFITS AND USES

  • Increases the water content of cells resulting in a moisturizing effect
  • Enhances exfoliation of dead skin cells leaving the skin smoother
  • Speeds the repair of damaged tissue by encouraging rapid cell growth
  • Stimulates creation of new healthy tissue

INCI NAME: Argania spinosa

EWG SCORE: 0

INGREDIENT PROFILE:

Golden, translucent oil that a light, but distinct nutty smell.

DERIVED FROM:

The Argan Oil we use in Sally B's Skin Yummies is extracted from the nut of the fruit of the Moroccan argan tree through a cold pressed and unrefined process.

However, goats were once used to aid in production of Argan Oil, since the shell of the nut is tough to crack. Goats love the black olive-like fruit it produces, but not the nut inside. It either gets spit out or, well, naturally discarded out the other end, leaving the shell cracked, softened, and easy to open.

HISTORY:

Also known as Moroccan green gold, Argan Oil is said to be the rarest oil in the world. In a lengthy, week long process, the oil is extracted from the seeds of the Argania Spinosa Tree’s fruit, which is grown in the desert of Morocco. The oil is extremely abundant in unsaturated fatty acids, linoleic acid, and Vitamin E, making it a great product for hydration and to neutralize free radicals, which helps slow the aging process. It also has a natural sebum regulating action that balances the skin's oil production, alleviating oily skin.  While a century old skin care product, customers today remark that it excels at alleviating signs and symptoms of eczema and psoriasis.

Today, avocados are grown worldwide in frost-free subtropical regions, primarily in New Zealand, Australia, Africa, and United States. INGREDIENT PROFILE

  • Beeswax is a yellow to brownish hard wax that has a sweet scent with honey and floral notes. The varying color of the wax is determined by the color intensity of the flowers gathered by the bees.

 DERIVED FROM

  • Within a beehive, young female worker bees create a wax that is molded into six-sided honeycomb cells, which become storage units for honeybee larva, collected pollen, and honey. Once a cell has been filled with honey, it will be capped off with more beeswax. When beekeepers extract the honey from the combs, the wax caps are removed from each honey comb cell and melted down to create a yellow wax. Often times the wax is further purified by heating it in water. Note: When seeking out beeswax or honey, look for organically sourced varieties. When bees collect pollen, they will also collect whatever pesticide is on the flower. Often times sourcing from overseas is the best solution as those countries have much stricter pesticide laws, which increases the end product's likelihood of being toxin-free. The influence of pesticides is just one theory behind the shrinking honey bee population. Click here to learn more about the importance of honey bees.

HISTORY

  • Beeswax might be one of the oldest ingredients to date, having several documented uses dating back to the first century. In Roman culture it was used to create candles, in Medieval Europe it was used as a form of currency, and in Egypt it was used for embalming processes. Coenzyme 10 or CoQ10 is a naturally occurring enzyme within the body, responsible for cell production, cell protection, and generating nearly 95% of the body’s energy. However, levels of CoQ10 naturally decrease as we age or as a result of stress. It’s been said that in most people over 30, levels of CoQ10 in the skin are below optimum.  This reduces your skin’s ability to produce collagen and elastin and makes it more susceptible to free radical damage.

Along with skin health, CoQ10 is also used to treat high blood pressure, heart disease, high cholesterol, breast cancer, and gum disease.

  • Cocos Nucifera Oil

EWG SKIN DEEP SCORE: 1 view profile

INGREDIENT PROFILE

  • A soft, semi-solid, waxyoilthat is clear to white, sometimes light yellow in color and has a richcoconutaroma.

 DERIVED FROM

  • Coconut Oil is extracted from the meat of a mature coconut harvested from a coconut palm tree through several processes.  Interestingly enough, this is one of the few plants where organic is not necessarily better than the non-organic variety since there is no use of pesticides on these plants.  They are hardy and the fruit grows high in the air.  They are never sprayed and GMO coconuts do not exist.

There is virgin and refined coconut oil.   Refined coconut oil has usually been heated and sometimes bleached.  It can also be known as RBD oil.  Some of the great properties of coconut oil remain intact through this method but due to the additional processing, some of the nutrients are lost.

Virgin Coconut oil can be the result of a cold press method, an expeller press method, or a centrifuge method.  The oil is extracted in most cases from dried coconut meat but new methods are emerging where the oil is extracted from fresh coconut meat.

Another form of coconut oil has also appeared on the scene called Fractionated Coconut Oil or MCT.  This is a refined coconut oil where the solids have been removed.  This oil has a very low melting point and has had the Lauric Acid removed.  The Medium Chain Fatty Acids remain and makes for a very stable, even though more processed material.

In our products, we use mainly a certified organic virgin coconut.  And in order to enhance the appearance or feel of a product, we also will use an organic refined coconut oil and even fractionated coconut oil in other products.  It’s a very versatile plant!

HISTORY

  • The name of the coconut tree (cocos nucifera) came from early Spanish explorers who thought the coconut resembled the face of a monkey or “coco.” It was quickly discovered the meat, milk, and oil of a coconut was extremely nutritious and has been a dietary staple for island cultures for several generations and even today. In fact, today nearly one third of the world’s population depends on the coconut for its food and their economy.

Throughout traditional Polynesian cultures, the coconut has been used for thousands of years as a medicinal cure, having been use to relieve burns, various rashes, skin infections, swelling, tooth aches, and wounds. Today, coconut oil is being rediscovered all over again and its benefits are being seen in treating bacteria and fungi, improving digestion, reducing inflammation, and minimizing symptoms of psoriasis, eczema, and dermatitis.

INGREDIENT PROFILE:
Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is available in a jelly-like liquid form, but we use a powder form of HA.

HISTORY:

  • Hyaluronic Acid is a naturally occurring carbohydrate that is found in the connective tissues of vertebrates. Once mainly sourced from rooster comb, it performs many important skin function, including repairing tissue, protecting skin against harmful microoganisms, and holding together collagen and elastin. It is also a superb humectant that keeps skin well hydrated. HA can hold up to a 1,000 times its weight in water. And it adjusts its moisture rate based on the humidity. It creates a layer over the skin that allows skin to breath and absorb moisture, enabling the skin to hold more moisture.
While our bodies naturally produce hyaluronic acid (it’s the reason behind a baby’s smooshy skin), production begins decreasing as early as age 18. This loss of HA is a contributor to the wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots we see later in life.

DERIVED FROM

  • While there is still Hyaluronic Acid made from rooster comb still available, we choose to use one that is made from a fermentation process created in a lab. Although sometimes sold in liquid form, we use a powder form. Liquid forms of HA contain a preservative and often times agents Propylene Gylcol and alcohol (both no-no's in our book). These ingredients are not always listed on ingredient labels.

Tinted Moisturizer

INCI NAME:

Simmondsia chinensis

EWG SCORE: 0

INGREDIENT PROFILE

Unrefined jojoba oil has a clear golden hue with a slightly nutty odor while refined jojoba oil is colorless and odorless.
DERIVED FROM

Jojoba oil (it's actually a liquid wax) is extracted from the seed of a nut from the jojoba shrub grown in the southwestern United States, Mexico, and South America.

HISTORY

While Native Americans have been using Jojoba oil for hundreds of years, Jojoba oil didn't make a name for itself commercially until the 1980s when it was found to be a sustainable (and cruelty-free!) alternative to Whale Oil, which believe it or not used to be a common skin care ingredient. Today it continues to be a replacement for whale oil and other whale oil derivatives such as cetyl alcohol.

PROPERTIES

Jojoba oil is relatively shelf-stable when compared with other vegetable oils mainly because it does not contain triglycerides, which increase the rate of rancidity and oxidization.
It is not only an excellent source of moisture, but it also mimics our skin’s naturally occurring sebum (oil) and helps to keep our sebaceous glands balanced, stopping the over production of oil when necessary.
Jojoba oil absorbs quickly into skin without clogging pores and its antibacterial properties help to reduce infection, which is ideal for those suffering from acne.
SKIN CARE BENEFITS AND USES

An excellent ingredient for moisturizers, jojoba nourishes and revitalizes the skin.
Jojoba is non-greasy and leaves skin feeling smooth and soft.
Makes for an excellent hair moisturizer and softener.
Helps to minimize the appearance of stretch marks and heal scars.

INGREDIENT PROFILE

  • Tamanu Oil is a yellow to greenish oil similar in appearance to olive oil with a nutty, odoriferous scent.

DERIVED FROM

  • Tamanu Oil is extracted from the nut of the fruit of the Tamanu Tree, which is indigenous to Southeast Asia, through a cold pressing process. The Tamanu Tree has black bark and shiny leaves and blooms twice a year with white, fragrant flowers that produce an almost apple-like fruit. The fruit’s large interior nut is extracted after it has already fallen off the tree (leaving no negative impact upon the tree) and dried in the sun for several months until it produces a sticky, thick oil. This oil is then cold-pressed to make Tamanu Oil, which closely resembles olive oil. Interestingly, it requires 100 kilograms of fruit (about the amount one tree produces annually) to create just 5 kilograms of Tamanu Oil, which is partly responsible for the premium price of this ingredient.

HISTORY

  • Native to Southeast Asia, Tamanu Oil has been used for centuries as a topical healing agent, proving successful in easing the symptoms of scraps, cuts, burns, insect bites, sunburns, and even eczema. Traditional Polynesian cultures believed the Tamanu tree was sacred and that gods hid in its branches, offering them protection the oil for protection for their skin from sunburn, high humidity, and harsh ocean winds. Today, Tamanu Oil continues to be hailed for its remarkable skin-healing qualities and also for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antibiotic, and antioxidant properties.
