Stay Moisturized with Hyaluronic Acid
A new season brings a new set of skin quirks, which is why today we want to talk about moisture. Temperatures have not yet turned frigid status, but the air is quickly losing its summer humidity. Many of us are already experiencing itchy arms, cracked lips, and tighter skin on our face. While there are many moisture-rich ingredients perfectly poised to remedy the dry skin situation (think: Shea Butter and Cocoa Butter), taking a proactive approach with your skin care routine can help you avoid it in the first place.
Enter hyaluronic acid (HA), an extremely effective humectant whose job it is to attract water to skin cells. The unique makeup of this ingredient allows it to hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water, adjusting its moisture rate based on the given humidity. This keeps skin balanced, and ensures that your skin is not holding an excess of moisture. When applied topically it creates a layer over the skin that allows it to breath, absorb, and hold moisture.
But why is moisture in your skin so important in the first place? Good question! Proper hydration keeps cells functioning at their most optimum. Well-moisturized skin enables cells to repair themselves and produce new, healthy cells. When there is a break down of cells – whether from free radicals or age related deteriorations – wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots start to appear.
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring compound in each of us. Our level of the stuff is at its peak when we are new to this world, which is why babies have oh-so-touchable skin. Hyaluronic acid is at work keeping it soft and smooshy. As we age, our ability to naturally produce HA begins to diminish. While we typically don't start seeing wrinkles and other signs of aging until our 30’s or 40’s, our HA production can start drastically declining in our early 20’s. Again, taking a proactive approach and applying HA regularly can help keep skin performing well no matter what our age.
When browsing through the Sally B’s Skin Yummies’ collection you will find that we use HA (lab created, vegan approved) in many of our daily-wear facial products, including our Carrot Facial Dream Cream, Intensive Eye Repair, and Tinted Moisturizer. All of these products are useful in adding moisture to the skin, but today we highlight our Daytime and Night Antioxidant Serums. And let us not forget our new star product, the Peptide Booster Serum.
Because our skin craves moisture in a dry climate, it is often necessary to add additional layers of moisture to your existing skin care routine. These serums are incredibly lightweight and quick to absorb into skin and so they make a wonderful product addition and do not weigh down skin. Incorporate them into the start of your routine by applying on top of clean skin or after your toner. While they provide adequate moisturizer for some, others will want to follow up with Dream Cream or Tinted Moisturizer. No matter what your routine, you'll be amazed how these serums, and the included hyaluronic acid, work to instantly make your skin soft and smooth.
While it’s easy to take a reactive approach to skin care – treating dry skin when you’re already itchy or covering up wrinkles when they first start appearing – thoughtful selection of products now can be valuable down the road. Hyaluronic acid will absolutely keep your skin looking and feeling its best this winter, but also think long term. Its benefits continue for years.
